What are the qualifications?
Qualifications for jobs at HCJPD vary with the positions. General requirements for all positions here include being at least 21 years of age, pass a criminal background check, show proof of a and be able to secure a Texas Driver’s License. It is important to read the job postings carefully. Applications that do not show proof of the required qualifications (i.e., work experience, licensure, education) will not be considered.
Do I need a degree?
Juvenile Probation Officers require one year of experience working with youth or in corrections/education/counseling, and a Bachelor’s degree. Youth Development Coaches only require a HS Diploma or GED, although experience working with youth is preferred.
Will I be trained?
All new employees attend a week-long New Hire Orientation. All certified officers attend an additional week and a half of Academy Training for JSO or JPO certification. The Department offers on-going training in various job-related subjects for all employees.
What are the insurance benefits?
Harris County Juvenile Probation participates in Harris County’s Benefits plan, which includes Medical, Dental and Vision coverage, Life Insurance, Long-Term Disability, and a Retirement plan administered by Texas County and District Retirement System (TCDRS).
Does HCJPD hire only Officers?
No. We employ a vast array of personnel to perform all of the many services that our department provides to the youth and families we serve, including but not limited to: Medical Staff (LVNs and RNs)Education Staff (Teachers and Substitute teachers), Mental Health Providers (Therapists, Psychologists, Clinical Interns), IT and Computer Support, Clerical Personnel, and HR and Training Personnel. Interested applicants should check the website often for new open position postings.
I applied already – when will they call me for an interview?
Our department receives hundreds of applications monthly for various positions, so not everyone will be granted an interview. Our hiring managers review all applications received, and select those that are the best qualified for interviews. You will receive automated emails when your application is being reviewed, and when it is received by the hiring managers.
